Higher Education w/ Kyle O’Quin - An Evening Of Fine Cannabis & Classical Piano

Friday, February 24th 7pm - 10pm | $12

Inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s The Unanswered Question series, Higher Education is the brainchild of Kyle O’Quin, keyboardist for Portland, OR-based musical outfit and Atlantic recording artists Portugal. The Man. A world class concert pianist, Kyle will be performing some of his favorite classical pieces, including works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy.

“The idea for Higher Education was that different artists can share their love of their art, whether it be music or painting or writing, using our collective understanding of cannabis as the platform for a cross-disciplinary examination. For instance, I’ll be pairing Rachmaninoff with the cannabis strain Critical Mass, and talking about their similarities,” O’Quin writes via email.

Hosting the evening’s entertainment is Live At Hifi Farms (LAHF), the long running event series established by Hifi Farms, a Clean Green Certified™ craft cannabis cultivation company located just outside of Portland, OR. Hifi was recently called “the coolest cannabis company in Oregon” by Esquire Magazine.

Past LAHF events have included unique, intimate performances by artists such as Lera LynnPatterson Hood, and Stephen MalkmusHigher Education promises to be another such evening.

“The word ‘classical’ kinda sucks because it implies this capital-S Seriousness and there’s so much pretentiousness in the air surrounding it,” O’Quin believes. “Also, we tend to write off classical music, partly because there’s just so much music and it’s such a rabbit hole… it’s not surprising that it’s considered boring. I’m not shocked that’s where it sits with kids.”

“I’d like to see classical music demystified a little bit. In the same way the Hifi Farms guys want to see cannabis destigmatized.”

All proceeds from this event will be donated to My Voice Music (MVM), a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon that engages youth in music and performance in order to promote self-esteem, social skills, and emotional expression. Anchored on a belief in the power of music, relationship, and story, MVM provides youth with engaging, relevant, and challenging experiences in music in order to promote the development of social and emotional skills.

This event is to be held on February 24th at the McCormick Mansion in SE Portland. Tickets are $12.Wine and nibbles will be provided, but please feel free to BYOB anything else you’d like to enjoy. No cannabis will be provided by the event's hosts.
